We are reading a radio piece by Dylan Thomas: Quite Early One Morning (1944).
Quite Early One Morning is a radio piece, a sketch for the later work, Under Milk Wood. Thomas recorded this imaginative description of New Quay on 14 December 1944 when he was a resident of that Cardiganshire seaside village: it is a mesmerizing and mysterious picture of a cold December morning before the town awakes to its daily routine.
Dylan Marlais Thomas (27 October 1914 – 9 November 1953) was a Welsh poet and writer. He became widely popular in his lifetime and remained so after his death at the age of 39 in New York City. His radio recordings for the BBC during the late 1940s brought him to the public’s attention, and he was frequently used by the BBC as an accessible voice of the literary scene. Although Thomas wrote exclusively in the English language, he has been acknowledged as one of the most important Welsh poets of the 20th century. He is noted for his original, rhythmic and ingenious use of words and imagery.
