We are incredibly pleased to be taking Under Milk Wood
to the New Inn, Hurstpierpoint. In association with
Gin Palace Productions, we will be offering this gem of a play
to a new audience in the gorgeous gardens of this lovely pub.

A blind sea captain yearns for his lost love and sails the
oceans of his youth, a landlady is in constant terror of having
guests, two passionate shopkeepers live in unrequited lust,
the boozy landlord, scurrying milkman, postman, fancy woman,
layabout, the optimistic elderly, the blossoming youth
and an entire town full of colourful characters are here…

As the tumble of townsfolk awake to a crystal spring day,
the village of Llareggub comes to life in this rich, funny, and
sentimental glimpse of life lived to the full. This beautifully
written “play for voices”, allowed Thomas to explore the
fantastic in the everyday life of these small people in this small
community, making every life and character worthy of our
attention. The beautiful poetry of the words gets under the
skin of the inhabitants of this bucolic location, unearthing inner
monologues and reflecting on a way of life soon to disappear.
It is at once a requiem, a snapshot and an unravelling of
ordinary people who “are not wholly bad or good”.
Chock-full of humour and sharp observation, the play rejoices
in its celebration of the everyday and zings with hope and a
sensual love of life and language.
