  • Newpoint Players Youth Group production of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas

The Newpoint Youth summer shows have been staged for more than 40 years. They provide enjoyable and purposeful occupation for a group of 20 students during most of the summer months. The young people work on a play for 4 hours a day, five days a week, 7 weeks of the Summer holiday and the first week of term.
There are no charges or fees for any of the young people involved. We are most grateful for the grant provided by the newly established Brian Conlon foundation administered by the Community Foundation which allowed us to bring in professional resources to give the youngsters the best possible hand on the tiller. Such a wonderful legacy from Brian.

More than 50 past members are now theatrical or media professionals. The youth productions for the past decade were: 2010, Little Women; 2011, To Kill A Mockingbird; 2012, Great Expectations; 2013, The Importance of Being Earnest; 2014 Oh! What a Lovely War; 2015, Treasure Island; 2016, A Shakespeare Miscellany, The Canterbury Tales in 2018 and Peter Pan in 2019. We continued through The Pandemic: in 2020 we performed and streamed (one of the first such events) Newry Now, Near & Never with 5 commissioned plays rehearsed and performed in isolation to each other; in 2021 we hosted 20 young actors writing and performing their own monologues with, frankly, stunning results.

Now, back to the stage with a very different style of production: the show is played ‘traverse’ style – a stage down the centre of the Town Hall with the audience arrayed on two sides like the Houses Of Parliament – hopefully more entertaining and with fewer grunts & groans!
