(An edited version of T. James Jones’ new adaptation of
Under Milk Wood, Dylan Thomas)
Under Milk Wood was originally a radio play but has been adapted and translated for stage and screen since it’s first performance in 1954. From the omniscient narrator’s first entrance we are invited to share the dreams and innermost thoughts of the villagers as they slowly appear in front of our eyes. Thomas’ original title for the play was The Village of the Mad, and as the characters gradually appear we soon realise why. But is he ‘holding a mirror up to nature’? Can we not see ourselves in the midst of the inhabitants of Llarregub? ‘Come closer now’.
