  • Swansea International Festival, Lighthouse Theatre, the Jubilee String Quartet, and Robert Marshall’s Awelan Ensemble present a celebration of the life and work of Swansea composer Daniel Jones.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Daniel ‘Dan’ Jones, the brilliant Swansea composer and friend of Dylan Thomas, we present a day of music, theatre and reminiscence, celebrating a great Swansea life.

The day’s activities include a performance of Jones’ Divertimento for Wind Quintet (Awelan Ensemble), two of his string quartets (Jubilee String Quartet), performances of two plays (Reminiscences of Childhood and Warmley) and panel discussions focused on Jones and his artistic legacy.

With generous support from The Vera Smart Trust and Tŷ Cerdd.

    Programme:
    11:00 Reminiscences of Childhood
Performed by Lighthouse Theatre. In Reminiscences of Childhood, Dylan Thomas relives his childhood memories of Swansea, inspiration for some of his best-loved short stories. Swansea-born Adrian Metcalfe leads his audience on a hilarious and unexpected journey through an extraordinary childhood landscape.

    12:20 Divertimento for Wind Quintet
    Performed by Awelan Ensemble.

    12:45 Buffet lunch
    Lunch available at The Hyst.

    13:45 Panel discussion 1
Daniel Jones Q&A – his life, work and influence.

    14:45 Warmley
Performed by Lighthouse Theatre and Robert Marshall (piano). A tribute to two giants of 20th century Swansea’s artistic scene, Warmley is written by Adrian Metcalfe and pianist Robert Marshall, and inspired by Daniel Jones’ book My Friend Dylan Thomas. Like Jones and Thomas, Metcalfe and Marshall went to school together and later both returned to live in the city to work on their respective artistic disciplines. Warmley is a beautiful chamber piece for actor and piano, telling the story of Jones and Thomas’ friendship at various stages of their lives, through Jones’ own words and music.

    Refreshments available at The Hyst.

    16:00 Panel discussion 2
