In two months time, on May 14th, we celebrate International Dylan Thomas Day. This is the sixth annual celebration of ‘Dylan Day’, which has now been firmly established on the arts calendar. Each year we encourage arts organisations and groups to stage events, as well as encouraging Dylan Thomas fans to celebrate in their own ways, particularly on social media.
We are all facing very worrying and challenging times at the moment; concern about the health of our family, friends and the wider community, as well as worrying about the economic impact of the measures that are being put in place. The COVID-19 outbreak is likely to have a particularly devastating affect on the arts sector, not just here in Wales and the UK, but across the globe. We understand that it may be difficult or impossible to stage live events this year, and although of course we will be delighted to support any that can safely take place, it may be that this year we have to take most of our celebrations on-line.
With that in mind, we would encourage organisations and individuals to think about how they could celebrate Dylan Thomas on-line, and I’m sure we would all welcome some thought provoking and entertaining content. We would encourage blogs, vlogs, videos, sound recordings, social media content, and more.
The Dylan Day team have already planned a Love the Words poetry competition, and will be launching a fun Under Milk Wood themed photography competition soon.
We’d love to make International Dylan Thomas Day this year a celebration of the creativity and imagination of the arts sector and of Dylan Thomas fans, and for us all to play a small part in boosting morale in these troubling times.
We look forward to hearing any proposals you might have. You can contact us via email contact@discovery.sites.k-hosting.co.uk
